The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Kano state command has recovered 150 blocks and three sacks of cannabis sativa, weighing a total of 112kg, following a road accident along the Zaria–Kano highway.
A statement issued by the spokesperson of the command, Sadiq Muhammad Maigatari revealed the incident happened around 6 a.m. on Saturday, September 6, near Gadar Tamburawa.
NDLEA patrol officers, who were nearby, rushed to the scene after hearing a loud crash involving a Volkswagen Golf and a truck.
“Officers immediately rushed to the scene to render first aid and effect rescues. They removed the windscreen and a window of the Golf to extricate the driver and forced open the other door to remove the passenger. The one on the passenger side attempted to flee immediately after opening the door, but was apprehended by officers.” The statement partly reads.
During a search, the operatives discovered the drugs concealed inside the vehicle.
According to the statement, the driver confessed that he was working for a consignor and had previously made similar drug deliveries both within and outside Kano.
“The driver also told investigators that he used a one-way route in an attempt to evade checkpoints mounted by the NDLEA while entering Kano” it added.
The driver of the Golf is currently receiving medical treatment while under investigation, while the truck driver reportedly sustained a fracture from the collision.
“This incident involved two offenses: one-way driving leading to a collision and trafficking in narcotics.” NDLEA emphasized.
The agency also urged members of the public to stay away from drug trafficking and report any suspicious movements of narcotics to its offices.
