Ndume labels Trump ‘Ignorant’ on Nigeria’s security realities

Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South, on Tuesday sharply rebuked U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent allegations of “Christian genocide” in Nigeria, characterising them as a sign of ignorance and misinformed perception.

Speaking on Arise TV, Ndume argued that Nigeria’s violence cannot be reduced to religious targeting. He noted that both Christians and Muslims have suffered in the country’s prolonged insecurity, particularly in areas affected by Boko Haram, and suggested that victims often reflect demographic and geographical realities more than sectarian intent.

“The claim that only Christians are being killed depends entirely on where the attack occurs,” he said. “If it happens in a Christian-dominated zone, naturally Christians will be the victims; if in Muslim-majority areas, the victims will often be Muslims.”

Ndume went further to criticise what he described as Trump’s lack of insight into Nigeria’s complex security environment. He said that portraying Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” based on the genocide narrative ignores the realities on the ground.

Earlier, Ndume had sponsored a motion in the Senate to challenge what he called “misconceptions” about religious violence in Nigeria and to urge diplomatic engagement in countering the CPC label.
