Nepal: Timi Frank demands reform of Nigeria’s electoral system

A former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Timi Frank, has warned that Nigeria could face that kind of unrest currently going on in Nepal if the 2027 general elections are not credible.

Frank, who raised the concerns in a statement on Monday, urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to implement reforms ahead of the elections to ensure credible polls and avert an uprising that could carry untold consequences in the country.

His statement followed a “Gen-Z” triggered protests in Nepal, which led to the death of over 72 people, including the razing of government offices, houses, and other buildings during the anti-corruption protests.

The violence in the Asian country has been described as the deadliest political unrest in decades and erupted when mainly young Nepalis poured into the streets of Kathmandu and other cities last week to force Prime Minister Khadga Sharma Oli to resign last Tuesday.

While issuing the warning, Frank stressed that INEC, the judiciary, and security agencies, as well as other democratic institutions in the country, have critical roles in upholding the rule of law and preventing similar unrest in Nigeria.

He also urged the APC to stop attacking, intimidating, and harassing opposition leaders in the country.

“This bold and positive action should not stand alone. As the nation looks ahead to the 2027 general elections,
INEC must replicate this same spirit of independence and courage in the overall conduct of the polls,” the activist said.

“Now that the new leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has been recognised by INEC, we urge Nigerians to repose confidence in and support it as the party that would change Nigeria for the better and ensure freedom and prosperity for all. We also urge Nigerians to be prepared to vote and defend their votes in 2027.”

He also called on INEC to implement vital reforms ahead of the polls to ensure free, fair, and credible elections, stressing that without urgent reforms and ethical leadership by electoral and security institutions, Nigeria is likely to face a heightened risk of violence and political instability similar to the #ENDSARS protest of 2020.

“Security agencies must be unbiased and stop their usual role in rigging elections for the ruling party. They must protect voters and prevent political violence. Failure to do so risks pushing Nigeria into a situation worse than Nepal’s recent unrest, given our challenges with poverty and tyranny,” he emphasized.
