The Niger State Internal Revenue Service, NGSIRS, has pushed back against a recent media report alleging irregularities in its operations, stating that the publication was made without any attempt to seek clarification or verification from the agency.
In a statement issued by its management on Wednesday, the Service described the claim that it was unreachable as “malicious and grossly misleading,” maintaining that it operates an open-door policy and remains accessible through its official communication channels.
“At no time was NGSIRS contacted by any media unit, reporter, or group to verify the information published. To suggest otherwise is malicious and grossly misleading,” the statement said.
The management acknowledged that revenue leakages remain a challenge but stressed that the issue is not peculiar to Niger State, noting that revenue authorities across the world grapple with similar problems.
“Revenue leakages are not unique to NGSIRS. They remain the principal challenge faced by revenue authorities globally. Our teams work daily to identify and block these leakages, often without publicity, as our focus is on results, not headlines,” the statement stated.
Highlighting its performance, the Service pointed to a significant increase in the state’s internally generated revenue (IGR), attributing the growth to reforms, enforcement, and the deployment of technology.
“The outcome of our reforms and enforcement drive is evident in the continuous growth of the State’s Internally Generated Revenue. NGSIRS has moved the State’s revenue profile from a paltry N600 million monthly average in 2021 to an average of N5 billion monthly as at December 2025,” the statement added.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and accountability, while calling on the media to uphold professional standards.
“Our doors are open to legitimate inquiries, oversight, and constructive engagement from the media and the public. We urge journalists to uphold the ethics of verification and balance before publication,” it said.
NGSIRS further stated that it would not be distracted by what it described as unverified reports, reiterating its focus on improving revenue generation for the development of Niger State.
