Nigeria’s power generation falls to 3,000MW as DisCos blame gas constraints

Electricity distribution companies (DisCos) have attributed the worsening power supply across Nigeria to a sharp decline in gas availability for power plants, warning customers to expect intermittent outages until the situation improves.

Recent checks show that national power generation, which exceeded 5,000 megawatts in 2025, has now dropped to between 3,000 and 4,000 MW. As of Friday noon, allocation to DisCos stood at 3,108 MW, a shortfall they say is directly linked to reduced gas supply.

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) on Friday confirmed that limited energy from the grid has significantly affected its franchise areas.

“Dear valued customers, we are keenly aware of the current low power supply and outages being experienced across our franchise area. Several locations are currently facing significant disruptions as a result of limited energy supply from the grid,” AEDC said in a notice.
“Our technical team is closely monitoring the situation in real-time and remains fully committed to restoring normal service at the earliest possible time as soon as our grid allocation improves. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience this has caused to your homes and businesses.”

Similarly, the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) linked poor supply in its coverage area to gas shortages affecting national generation.

“This is to inform you that power generation on the National Grid has dropped due to gas supply constraints. This situation has led to intermittent load shedding across our franchise areas,” EKEDC explained.
“The situation is being closely monitored, and efforts are being made to mitigate the current gas supply constraints. We will keep you updated as the situation improves.”

The development reveals the vulnerability of Nigeria’s power sector to gas supply disruptions, with generation shortfalls quickly translating into reduced electricity for consumers. It comes on the heels of two national grid collapses in January, which plunged the country into widespread blackouts.
