Nigerians have expressed outrage after videos surfaced online showing women struggling to escape from men during an event described as a “rape festival”.
The disturbing footage, which has circulated widely on social media, shows multiple women fighting for their lives as they are restrained.
Reports indicate that the event is scheduled to last seven days in Ozoro, Delta State.
In the videos, several women are seen crying out for help after being assaulted.
A man featured in one clip reportedly said, “During this period, any girl that comes outside will be raped.” Another man added, “Any woman outside becomes a target.”
Reacting to the videos, media commentators and members of the public have called on the police and the government to urgently investigate the matter and bring those responsible to justice.
Activist Deji Adeyanju tweeted, “Dear @PoliceNG_CRU and @PoliceNG, everyone involved in this barbaric act must be arrested and prosecuted. Act now, please.”
The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Delta State Command, SP Bright Edafe, issued a statement condemning the alleged event.
He said, “This is alarming, disgusting, and embarrassing. The CP has ordered an investigation into the incident. The command condemns this in totality; no custom or tradition is superior to the rights of citizens.”
The statement added that the Commissioner of Police, Delta State, CP Aina Adesola, urged residents to remain calm while assuring that those responsible for this barbaric act would be arrested and brought to justice.
The Command also called for witnesses who can provide useful information to aid the investigation, saying, “We appeal to anyone with credible information to come forward and assist the police in ensuring justice is served.”
