Nigerians warn Asari Dokubo against comments that would incur US wrath

Nigerians have warned former Niger Delta militant and ex-leader of the now defunct Niger Delta People’s Volunteer Force (NDPVF), Mujahid Asari-Dokubo, against making comments that could incur the wrath of US President Donald Trump to turn his attention to the country.

Dokubo has been consistent in making statements taunting the US following Trump’s order for US troops to invade Nigeria and wipe out terrorists in the northern parts of the country.

In some of his comments, Dokubo had threatened to lead his army to fight the US troops while in yet another, he had declared that any foreign soldier that steps foot into Nigeria will not get out alive.

On Thursday, he released another video where he insinuated that America’s aim in Nigeria is to steal crude oil as well as establish a Biafran Republic for the Igbos, adding that if such happens, they will not go back alive.

‘If Americans dare come to Nigeria to take our oil or create Biafra for Igbo people, they will not go back alive,’ the ex-militant leader said.

However, his remarks did not seat well with many Nigerians who have cautioned him against inciting the US which could cause them to turn their eyes on Nigeria after what they did in Iran.

Some comment on social media begged Trump not to take Dokubo seriously as his comments do not reflect the feelings of a generality of the Nigerian masses.

Statements like that sound more like empty noise than serious talk. The United States is one of the most powerful nations in the world, so trying to posture as if one individual can stand against it is simply unrealistic.

“People should be careful with this kind of dramatic rhetoric. If the United States ever decided to support something like Biafra independence movement, shouting on social media would not change anything.

“If anything, people like him should keep talking. The more noise and hostility that comes out in public, the more attention the Biafra independence movement continues to receive globally. Ironically, that kind of rhetoric often pushes the conversation about Biafra even further into international awareness.

“In reality, talks like this just makes him look like a comedian trying to play tough. He is looking for attention and relevance.”
