No proof Iran can strike Europe with missiles – UK senior minister

A senior UK minister has said there is no evidence to support claims that Iran is planning to attack Europe with ballistic missiles or that it even has the capability to do so.

Speaking on Sunday, Housing Secretary Steve Reed dismissed concerns raised a day earlier after Israel’s military suggested Iran had missiles capable of reaching major European cities such as London, Paris and Berlin.

“There is no assessment to substantiate what’s being said,” Reed told the BBC.
“I’m not aware of any assessment at all that they are even trying to target Europe, let alone that they could if they tried.”

Reed also reacted to comments made by U.S. President Donald Trump, who warned that Iran’s power plants could be destroyed if the country failed to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours.

In an interview with Sky News, Reed made it clear that Trump was speaking for himself.
“The U.S. president is perfectly capable of speaking for himself and defending what it is that he’s saying,” he said.

Reed added that Britain does not want to be drawn into any conflict but will continue to protect its own interests.

“We’re not going to be dragged into the war, but we will protect our own interests in the region. We will work with our allies to de-escalate the situation,” he said.
