No Room for Backdoor Politics: Fubara tells new SSG, Chief of Staff, ‘engage in secret meetings, face sack’

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has issued a stern directive to the newly appointed Secretary to the State Government and Chief of Staff, warning that any involvement in clandestine meetings or conduct capable of tarnishing his administration will result in immediate removal from office.

The governor delivered the warning on Thursday at the Government House in Port Harcourt shortly after Dr. Dagogo Wokoma was sworn in as Secretary to the State Government (SSG) and Sunny Ewule as Chief of Staff.

Administered by the Chief Registrar of the State High Court, David Ihua-Maduenyi, the ceremony saw the two officials take the Oath of Allegiance and Oath of Office before Governor Fubara addressed them on the weight of their new responsibilities.

Fubara stressed that their appointments should be viewed strictly as a call to service, not an avenue for personal ambition or political manoeuvring. He reminded them that loyalty, discipline and an unwavering focus on governance must define their tenure.

Speaking to Dr. Wokoma, whom he described as a seasoned academic and mathematician, the governor expressed confidence in his competence while underscoring the gravity of the SSG’s office.

He said, “The office of the Secretary to the State Government demands thoroughness, discipline, and a deep sense of responsibility.

“Your duty includes representing the state government. You need to represent us in a manner that brings honour to the state. What is important to this administration is to ensure that the good works we started, and those we inherited, are concluded in a way that brings progress and development to our dear state.”

Turning to Ewule, Fubara outlined the strategic and sensitive nature of the Chief of Staff position, noting that it requires seamless coordination of government business and protection of the administration’s image.

He added a blunt caution: “Let me make it very clear: your duty is to handle administrative duties and image-making roles efficiently, liaising with anyone coming for any official assignment. If you involve yourself in nocturnal meetings or similar activities, I will sack you. I am very serious. What matters to me is the peace, progress, and prosperity of this state. I will not compromise on that.”

The governor further warned that any act capable of bringing his office or the state government into disrepute would attract firm sanctions.

While congratulating the appointees, he expressed hope that they would justify the trust placed in them and work collaboratively with other officials to advance the state’s development agenda.

Fubara also used the occasion to address Permanent Secretaries in attendance, directing those who have reached retirement age to begin compiling their handover notes. He clarified that the directive was not meant to intimidate but to ensure a smooth and orderly transition.

In addition, he cautioned against financial impropriety or last-minute irregularities, stressing that his administration is closely monitoring the system to enforce strict accountability and safeguard public resources.
