
Kebbi State Government has constituted a high-powered committee to investigate recent fire outbreaks in schools across the state, with a view to determining their causes and preventing future occurrences.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Thursday by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Kebbi State Governor, Yahaya Sarki.
According to the statement, the directive was issued from the Office of the Governor and conveyed through the Ministry of Innovation and Digital Economy on January 14, 2026.
The committee is to be chaired by the Commissioner for Innovation and Digital Economy, Hon. Ibrahim Muhammad Sakaba.
Other members include the Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB, Prof. Sulaiman Khalid; the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education; representatives of the Office of the Commissioner of Police, the Department of State Services, DSS, and the State Fire Service.
The Executive Director of the Kebbi State Security Management Agency will serve as the Secretary of the committee.
Its terms of reference include investigating the immediate and remote causes of the school infernos, assessing the extent of damage and losses recorded, recommending appropriate safety and preventive measures, and submitting a comprehensive report with actionable recommendations to the state government.
The Kebbi State Government reiterated its commitment to the safety of students, teachers and educational infrastructure, assuring residents that all necessary steps would be taken to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.
