Former presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, Adewole Adebayo, has dismissed calls for a revolution in Nigeria, saying what the country needs is better governance and policy reforms.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday, Adebayo argued that while many Nigerians are dissatisfied with the state of the nation, a revolution is not the solution.
The statement followed remarks by former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, who warned that the country risks civil unrest as a result of the biting economic hardship.
However, Adebayo said the focus should be on achieving a democratic change of government in 2027 or, before then, urging the current administration to adopt smarter and more accountable policies.
Adebayo acknowledged that President Bola Tinubu has made efforts but insisted that the pace and scale of his policies are not sufficient to meet the needs of Nigerians.
He further stressed the importance of tackling unemployment, particularly among young people, noting that job creation would reduce agitation.
He said: “Well, the situation at hand is not salutary for any Nigerian, the average Nigerian, at least. But I don’t subscribe to the point that we need a revolution or anything. We need a change of government, the democratic change of government, so that we can have a change of policy. Even before we have a change of government in 2027, I am more interested in the government of the day having a change of policy, and it has been their policy.
“Our problems are not difficult to solve. If anyone comes to me today and says, let’s do a revolution in Nigeria, I will say, don’t do anything like that. Just make simple changes. You don’t need the Arab Spring. You don’t need any of those things. What you need is a more accountable government, a government that is more responsive and is smarter in the management of our resources.
“We need an improvement over what President Tinubu is doing. He’s doing something but he is not doing enough and he cannot. He’s not working at the rate, which can answer the needs of the people. But there is nothing the government is doing that’s illegal, unlawful, unconstitutional, that you want to do revolution against them. You just need to keep pointing out the weaknesses in their policies.
“The real money that President Tinubu as a tax collector is looking for lies in the muscle and the brain of the young people who are not employed now. So we must do a budget that allows them to get employed. By the time we get people employed, Vice President Atiku will not see anybody to join his revolution. People will be at work, working.”
