Obi visits Bauchi governor, advocates 5-year single term for president

The Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, on Friday advocated a five-year single term for the President in Nigeria.

Obi made the call when he visited the Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, at the Government House in Bauchi.

He said: “I have said it and I want to say it again in this government house that if I have the opportunity, we should stop having a second tenure for the president.

“It should be five years straight, so that people can come in knowing they have a job to do.

“What people do now is to be president for one year and use the rest of the years thinking about their next tenure. We must stop it, let’s face the real job, do your own, and go.”

The former Anambra State governor insisted that if elected as president in 2027, he would only serve for one term and vowed promising that he won’t spend a day longer than four years in office.

Obi added that if allowed to serve Nigeria, he would ensure that every political party functions properly.

“I want the party to be bigger than the president and the governors so that we can have orderliness,” the LP chieftain stated.

In his remark, the governor urged Obi to come back to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Mohammed said: “We want you to come back to PDP. Please come back because that is where you belong.

“We want you to be in PDP; there are plans, desires, and strategies.”

The governor, who stressed that politics in Nigeria should not be done with ego, differences, and personal interest, urged the opposition elements to harmonise their interests in the interest of Nigerians.
