The Commissioner of Police in Ondo State, Adebowale Lawal, has directed worship centres across the state to install Closed-Circuit Television, CCTV, systems as part of measures to enhance the security of their premises.
According to Lawal, the installation of CCTV in worship centres and other public places is an executive order that has been in effect in the state since 2022.
The state has, in recent weeks, faced a series of security challenges, including the abduction of six worshippers from a Celestial Church in the Uso community, Owo Local Government Area.
The police chief, who toured various religious centres to assess security levels, urged religious leaders to remain vigilant and implement adequate security measures. He had earlier appealed to worship centres to consider suspending all-night religious services amid the ongoing security concerns.
Lawal also stressed the importance of screening congregants at entry points during activities, emphasizing that functional CCTV cameras will greatly aid intelligence gathering and effective monitoring of activities within their premises.
Some of the worship centres visited included NASFAT Central Mosque, Akure; St Patrick’s Catholic Church, Ijebu-Owo; St Stephen’s Anglican Church, Ipele; Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Owo; NASFAT Mosque, Owo; and Anglican Methodist Church, Owo, as well as Ansarudeen Central Mosque, Owo, and Celestial Church of Christ, Uso, among others.
While urging residents to provide swift and actionable information, the police commissioner reiterated that the command remains committed to the safety and security of all residents and worshippers across the state.
