A former Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, on Friday urged Nigerian workers to remain steadfast in defending their rights and upholding the values of unity and collective struggle.

Oshiomhole. a former President of the NIgerian Labour Congress (NLC), made the call during the 2026 International Workers’ Day rally in Abuja.

He reflected on the historical significance of the labour movement, noting that the celebration did not emerge from goodwill but from sustained resistance against exploitation.

“We celebrate today not as a gift from the capitalists, but as a product of struggle.

“There was a time when trade unions were illegal. From that tradition, we have proven that the wheel of production cannot move without the workers,” the former governor stated.

Oshiomhole decried the poor welfare of some Nigerian workers, especially those earning as low as N40,000 and N45,000 monthly despite the rising cost of living.

“Laws on minimum wage were made to protect workers and must be fully enforced by both government and private sector employers,” he said

He advised workers to remain united in resisting exploitation and also ensuring that employers comply with labour laws.

He also pledged solidarity with workers in a lawful struggle aimed at defending their rights and dignity.

“Any day you want to mobilise around abuja, to deal with those exploiters, I will want to be by you.

“Not symbolically, but rogatically, so that together, we must ensure that the laws passed by the government are obeyed by everyone,” Oshiomhole concluded.
