The Osun State Police Command has condemned an attack on its personnel following a viral video showing hoodlums assaulting officers in Ilobu community.
The Police confirmed that four suspects have been arrested in connection with the attack, while additional individuals linked to the incident have been identified and are being tracked for arrest.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Gotan, on Thursday, the Command described the incident as unlawful and an affront to constituted authority.
It stated that the officers were attacked while responding to intelligence regarding a potential breakdown of peace between the Erin-Osun and Ilobu communities.
According to the statement, “The officers had been deployed to the area over a disputed boundary land issue involving elements suspected to be planning unrest. The Command strongly condemns the act, describing it as unlawful and a direct attack on constituted authority.”
The police explained that upon arrival, “officers dispersed the hoodlums, but some youths in Ilobu community allegedly turned against the security personnel, physically assaulting them during the operation. One of the officers was dragged to Olobu palace, where he was further subjected to inhumane treatment.”
The statement disclosed that CP Gotan has ordered a high-powered investigation into the matter and deployed an intervention team to the affected communities to restore calm.
While noting that those found culpable would face the full weight of the law, the Command issued a stern warning to residents of both communities to desist from any form of violence, hostilities, or attacks on security agents.
