Osun State Police Command has expanded its investigation into the fatal shooting of a motorist along the Iwo–Osogbo Road.

This is as the Command has placed both the Nigeria Customs Service personnel and police officers stationed nearby under scrutiny.

According to the Command Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi on Sunday in a statement, two operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service suspected to be directly involved in the shooting are currently in custody as inquiries continue.

Ojelabi also said police personnel manning a nearby police checkpoint at the time of the incident are also being investigated to determine their level of involvement or response during the shooting.

He confirmed that the suspected shooters had been identified as Kolawole Suuti and Danjuma Samuel, both attached to the customs service.

He stated that the Police were examining all aspects of the case, including the conduct of personnel present at the location when the shooting occurred.

“The investigation is ongoing, and we are looking into every detail surrounding the incident,” Ojelabi said.

Providing further details, the command later identified the deceased as 41-year-old Anayo Azikwe Michael, a native of Delta State.

“The deceased was from Delta State. His name is Anayo Azikwe Michael, aged 41,” the police spokesperson disclosed.

He added that members of the victim’s family were already en route to Osun to follow up on the matter and receive further updates from the police.

Ojelabi noted that the detained customs operatives had reported at the police headquarters and remained in custody pending the outcome of the investigation.

He emphasised that the police officers who were on duty at the checkpoint when the incident occurred would also face scrutiny as part of efforts to establish the full sequence of events.

“We are also subjecting the police officers at the scene to investigation for verification. We will not leave any stone unturned in getting to the root of the matter,” he said.

Police operatives have maintained their presence in the area following the incident, while residents continue to demand a transparent investigation and appropriate action against anyone found culpable.
