Osun State Directorate of the National Orientation Agency, NOA, has called on residents to adopt preventive health measures aimed at curbing the spread of COVID-19 and other infectious diseases.
The appeal was contained in a press statement issued by the agency and signed by its Public Relations Officer, Bunmi Olaseinde, on Wednesday in Osogbo.
According to the statement, the sensitisation campaign is being led by the State Director, Adebiyi Adefarasin Stephen, who urged residents to remain vigilant and proactive in safeguarding public health.
The agency noted that “its advisory aligns with recent guidance issued by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, emphasising the importance of responsible health behaviour at both individual and community levels.”
It recommended “regular handwashing with soap and clean water, as well as the use of alcohol-based sanitisers, as key measures to reduce the risk of infection.”
Residents were also advised to “observe respiratory etiquette, including covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, and avoiding close contact with individuals exhibiting symptoms such as fever, cough, or breathing difficulties.”
The statement stressed the need to ensure proper ventilation in homes, workplaces and public spaces, describing it as critical in limiting the spread of airborne infections.
“Residents are encouraged to seek prompt medical attention if they feel unwell and to avoid self-medication,” the statement read.
It also urged members of the public to rely on verified information from recognised health authorities to stay informed about developments related to infectious diseases.
The agency called on community leaders, religious bodies, market associations and youth groups to support awareness campaigns and promote adherence to public health guidelines.
While urging residents to remain responsible and united in protecting community wellbeing, the statement added “Prevention remains the most effective tool in combating infectious diseases.”
The NOA reaffirmed its commitment to working with stakeholders to ensure accurate health information reaches all parts of the state, adding.
The Osun NOA warning became necessary after the Cross River State Government in Tuesday confirmed the isolation of a Chinese national following a suspected case of COVID-19 at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital.
The Commissioner for Health, Henry Egbe Ayuk, speaking on behalf of the state government disclosed that the patient is currently under medical care and close monitoring.
According to Ayuk, the individual arrived in Nigeria through Lagos on March 17, 2026, before travelling to Cross River State en route to a factory located in Akamkpa Local Government Area.
