Outrage over video of poor food quality served in a Nigerian school

3 hours ago 2

Nigerians on social media have reacted negatively to a video showing the poor quality of food being served in a boarding school under the National Home Grown School Feeding Programme (RH-NHGSFP), a school feeding program under the Renewed Hope Initiative of the President Bola Tinubu administration.

In the video shared by journalist, Rufai Oseni on his X handle on Wednesday where he tagged “A school in Nigeria’, the cooks are seen dishing out what appears to be black watery substance meant to be soup into several plates scattered on a table while plates of either ‘eba’ or ‘semovita’ are also seen as the hungry students wait to devour them.

However, commenters took exception to the poor food being dished out to the students and expressed their outrage in various ways.

While some believe the school authorities could have embezzled the funds meant to provide quality food for the students, others blamed the government for deceiving Nigerians into believing that the free school feeding programme is going in the right direction of improving the health and nutrition of pupils.

@NewBen82:

“What is this? Nigeria is already happening to this innocent guys at their young age. Will these students ever recover fully from this psychological trauma?
Somebody somewhere is responsible for this evil, one leader has cornered the funds meant for these leaders of tomorrow to feed well so their brain can develop well.

Nigeria is a Savage jungle.”

@ipledgetoNigeria:

“Bottom line – Anything goes in Nigeria. No accountability & transparency. No repercussions for wrongdoing as long as you’re connected to the right crook.
As a result, their parents will praise, sing and dance for their oppressors.”

@anasuachara:

“This looks like coloured water with eba. You will faint by the time you hear how many Billions that was used to cook this water water.”

@MrOzoh1:

“Place it side by side and see that we are living in hell. Yet people find the strength and audacity to defend this situation.”

@Flourish007:

“Regardless of our political differences, we must acknowledge the complete collapse of our education system. The government should prioritize urgent reforms, as the current situation is utterly unacceptable and amounts to torture and abuse.”

@Adaete1:

“Malnutrition. They’ll grow up without proper brain formation. Struggle in school and end up arguing stupidly like Omojuwa on twitter.”

@DRealMagnus:

“Is this a government owned school or a private school?
Looks like a boarding school. The principal should be arrested if it’s a private owned school. Then if it’s the government, it is what it is.

“This is sad to see, and I wonder why parents send their kids to boarding school that’s not of good standard?”

@vonasc:

“I thought the Government has distributed 330 billion Naira to all these children and their parents? Nigeria’s population is 200 million people but APC government claimed they shared 330 billion to 8.1 million people. Alternatively 200m people should have gotten 1.5m each.”

@RealMrKay:

“The older generation will tell these kids that they’re lucky for seeing this nonsense. Stressing that during their time, they weren’t offered such. A revolution is the only thing that will reset Nigeria.”

@Indokhem:

“Actually it has been like this for very long time, check majority of the so call govt boarding schools, u ll never believe what their students eat as food. Ma NYSC open my eyes to a lot of evil and wickedness going on cos of corruption.”

@AhiaWolf:

“School supervision and inspection is not in existence in Nigeria. All they do is take bribe. Because tell me how this school is allowed to function. The entire boarding schools in Nigeria need to be paid occasional visits and students interviewed to ascertain their welfare.”

@OlanusiAkin:

“After, the Federal Government will tell us that they have spent N500 billion on the school feeding program. Who is deceiving who?”

@MaryLifted:

“This is unbelievable. How on earth did we get to this level? This school must be investigated and shut down. They can’t reduce these kids to prisoners.”
