Oyo: Police arrest two railway staff for beating, assaulting UI lecturer

Officers of the Oyo State Police Command have arrested two staff of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) for beating and assaulting a lecturer in the Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies, University of Ibadan, Mikail Abdulsalam.

The two NRC staff were arrested on Wednesday by policemen from Moniya Division.

The third suspect reportedly fled, DAILY POST gathered.

Our correspondent reports that there was outrage in the early hours of Wednesday at the Obafemi Awolowo Railway Station, Moniya in Ibadan when the lecturer was beaten and assaulted by the railway staff.

Abdulsalam was at the station to drop off his sister, who was travelling by rail to Lagos.

It was learnt that the staff descended on the lecturer immediately after he stopped his car to drop off his sister.

Sources narrated that despite maintaining a calm disposition, the lecturer was harassed, beaten, and assaulted by some staff of the corporation.

DAILY POST gathered that the matter was thereafter reported at Moniya Division of the Nigeria Police Force.

The victim, while narrating his ordeal, told DAILY POST that the matter has been reported at Moniya Division.

He added that he sustained various degrees of injuries during the incident and that some arrests have been made by the police.

The Public Relations Officer of the state police command, Olayinka Ayanlade, when contacted, confirmed the incident.

Ayanlade, while speaking with DAILY POST on Wednesday evening, said that two suspects have been arrested while the third person has fled.

“The suspects are in custody, two of them. The third suspect ran away,” he said.
