The internal crisis currently rocking the the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has taken a fresh dimension following the suspension of Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, along with top officials of the party by a faction led by National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, which has the backing of the Minster of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, ahead of its national convention slated for November 15 and 16.

The move by Anyanwu came after the Damagum-led National Working Committee (NWC), during an emergency meeting held in Abuja on Friday, suspended him, the party’s National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade, Okechukwu Osuoha, Deputy Legal Adviser, and Umaru Bature, the National Organising Secretary, over some alleged anti-party activities.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, who announced the decision after the meeting, said the suspension of the officials were part of efforts to restore discipline within the party.

But in a counter move, the Wike faction also wielded the hammer by announcing the suspension of Damagun and the others at a press conference in Abuja on Saturday.

Anyanwu who made the announcement while briefing newsmen in Abuja on Saturday on behalf of the factional NWC, said Damagun had been replaced by Mohammed Abdulrahman, the National Vice Chairman (North Central), as the Acting National Chairman.

“Unfortunately, some people may say that the National Secretary, National Organising Secretary, who has the responsibility of monitoring everything and the National Legal Adviser, who is responsible for all legal issues, were purportedly suspended,” he said

“On this note, we decided to suspend the National Chairman of the party, Ambassador Ilya Damagum, for incompetence, financial misconduct, and disregard for court judgment. He has been suspended for one month and should face the Disciplinary Committee.

“Secondly, we also suspended the National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, for issuing statements without the party’s approval, and the Deputy National Vice Chairman (South), Taofeek Arapaja, has also been suspended.

“The National Youth Leader, Sulaiman Kadade, and the Deputy National Secretary, Setonji Koshoedo, have also been suspended for 30 days. All of them will be sent to the Disciplinary Committee to show cause why they should not be expelled.

“Therefore, we are announcing the National Vice Chairman (North Central) to serve as the Acting National Chairman, Mohammed Abdulrahman.”
