PDP must play its part to rescue Nigeria — Damagum

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Umar Damagum, has tasked party leaders and members to brace up for the task of rescuing Nigeria.

Damagum gave this charge in Abuja on Wednesday at the Bauchi Governor’s lodge.

There had been a cloud of doubt over the Ibadan national convention following last week’s ruling by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, restraining the PDP from going ahead with the convention.

Justice Omotosho said that the party had failed to comply with its own rules, noting that the notification for the Ibadan convention was not properly signed by relevant party officials as stipulated in the PDP Constitution.

Omotosho’s ruling was hailed by some chieftains of the party, including Federal Capital Territory Minister, Mr Nyesom Wike.

Reprieve, however, came the way of the party on Tuesday as the Oyo State High Court, presided over by Justice Ladiran Akintola, ordered the PDP to go ahead with the convention and directed the Independent National Electoral Commission to monitor the same.

Speaking at the BoT meeting in Abuja, Damagum recalled the poor state of affairs he met the PDP when he assumed leadership of the party in acting capacity and charged members to forge a common front ahead of the convention.

“We do not have to be in power to begin our mission to rescue, redirect, and rebuild this country. That mission begins right here, in opposition. You must remain committed to the ideals of our party.

He commended Justice Akintola for demonstrating exemplary bravery in his conduct, which has now paved the way for the party to hold its convention.
