The United States has confirmed the first American casualties in its escalating military campaign against Iran, with three service members killed and several others wounded, according to the Pentagon.
Fighting continued into Sunday following large-scale U.S. strikes that began a day earlier. American forces launched extensive bombardments targeting Iran’s military infrastructure, and Iranian officials reported that the country’s supreme leader was killed in the attacks. Military operations were still underway as of Sunday.
In a statement, U.S. Central Command outlined the toll on American forces.
“Three U.S. service members have been killed in action and five are seriously wounded as part of Operation Epic Fury. Several others sustained minor shrapnel injuries and concussions — and are in the process of being returned to duty,” US Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement.
The command added that the situation remains active and details are being withheld pending notification of families.
“Major combat operations continue and our response effort is ongoing. The situation is fluid, so out of respect for the families, we will withhold additional information, including the identities of our fallen warriors, until 24 hours after next of kin have been notified.”
The U.S. military campaign has involved coordinated air and naval strikes alongside Israeli forces. President Donald Trump has stated that the objective of the offensive is to dismantle Iran’s military capabilities.
Iran has retaliated by launching missiles at Israeli targets and at U.S. military installations across the region.

Earlier Sunday, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claimed they had struck the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln in the Gulf with four ballistic missiles. U.S. officials swiftly denied the assertion.
CENTCOM said the aircraft carrier “was not hit.”
“The missiles launched didn’t even come close. The Lincoln continues to launch aircraft in support of CENTCOM’s relentless campaign to defend the American people by eliminating threats from the Iranian regime,” a statement said.
The situation remains volatile as both sides continue military operations and exchange claims over battlefield developments.
