Kwara State Police Command has apprehended a 15-year-old boy, identified as Gobri Yusuf, for allegedly killing his guardian, simply identified as Akanbi, who reportedly adopted and raised him in Ilorin, the state capital.
Yusuf is alleged to have attacked the woman with household items after an earlier attempt to poison her failed.
The development was disclosed on Friday by the state Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, during a press briefing at the command headquarters in Ilorin.
Ojo explained that the suspect was arrested after the police received a distress call reporting the discovery of Akanbi lying in a pool of blood inside her residence.
According to the police chief, preliminary investigations revealed that the teenager, who lived with the deceased, allegedly carried out the assault while the woman was bathing.
He said findings indicated that the suspect hid behind a door before launching the attack using various household objects.
The police recovered several items from the suspect, including a frying pan, a weighing scale, a kitchen spatula, and knives believed to have been used in the assault.
Ojo further stated that the suspect reportedly admitted to committing the act during interrogation, claiming that resentment toward the deceased motivated the attack.
The commissioner added that after the incident, the teenager allegedly changed his clothes and left the house under the guise of running an errand.
He was said to have later contacted the deceased’s husband, who eventually returned home and found his wife lifeless.
Ojo confirmed that the suspect is currently in police custody while investigations into the incident are ongoing.
