Police arrest multiple suspects for theft, fraud in Niger

The Niger State Police Command has arrested eight suspects in connection with motorcycle thefts, fraud, and other criminal activities across the state.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, intelligence received on 6th March 2026 led police to a suspected criminal hideout along Jebba Road in Mokwa.

He explained that on 8th March at about 5:30 pm, a patrol team led by the Divisional Police Officer of Mokwa arrested 35-year-old Yahaya Alh. Nma and recovered three Bajaj motorcycles and one TVS motorcycle suspected to be stolen.

The PRO disclosed that further investigation led to the arrest of three other suspects: Abdullahi Usman (35), Idris Mohammed (40), and Mohammed Ndako (27).

He stated that they reportedly confessed to stealing multiple motorcycles within Mokwa.

Police said efforts are ongoing to apprehend other gang members and recover additional stolen motorcycles.

In separate incidents, Abiodun revealed that 42-year-old Yahaya Mohamed of Bayagi, Bida, was arrested for impersonating a police officer to defraud phone repair shops.

The Police imagemaker said Mohammed allegedly obtained phone screen repairs without payment, totaling #32,500 in two separate incidents earlier this year. Investigations are ongoing to identify additional victims.

Also, he revealed that on 3rd March, Abubakar Lawal of Dzukogi, Bida, was arrested for stealing a goat from a sawmill area, adding that the suspect admitted he intended to sell the animal.

He further stated that in Suleja, two suspects, Abraham Pius Agada and Moses Ochapa, both from Masaka, Nasarawa State, were arrested on 6th March for using fake debit alerts to fraudulently purchase five 1-litre engine oil cans valued at about #20,000.

The suspects confessed to committing similar fraud in Kefi, Nasarawa, and Suleja. Police recovered a Toyota Corolla (registration ASH 972 SK) and more than a dozen engine oil cans obtained fraudulently, he added.

The duo were charged to court on 11th March and remanded in a correctional facility.
