The Osun State Police Command has arrested a 54-year-old man, Ojo David Oluwasesan, over an alleged visa fraud amounting to N8,410,000.
The command also warned members of the public to be wary of fraudulent travel agents.
According to a statement issued by the Command spokesperson, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan on Thursday, the suspect allegedly defrauded unsuspecting victims under the false pretence of securing travel visas.
The police said the incident was reported to have occurred in January 2025, when two complainants were introduced to the suspect by a friend. He reportedly presented himself as a travel agent capable of processing travel documents.
“The victims gave him the sum of three million, six hundred thousand naira (N3,600,000) to help them process their visa and ticket to travel to Luxembourg in the United Kingdom,” the statement said.
However, instead of fulfilling the agreement, the suspect allegedly absconded with the money and could not be reached thereafter.
During the course of investigation, detectives uncovered further allegations against the suspect involving additional victims. Police said the suspect had allegedly duped others of N4,810,000.
This brought the total amount allegedly obtained by false pretence to N8,410,000, according to the Command.
“Immediately the Police received the report, detectives swung into action and through intelligence-led investigation, the suspect was arrested and confessed to the crime,” DSP Ojelabi stated.
The suspect has since been charged to court and remanded in a correctional facility pending further proceedings.
The Command advised members of the public to exercise caution when engaging travel agents for visa processing, urging them to verify credentials properly to avoid falling victim to fraud.
