The Kebbi State Police Command has confirmed the killing of five worshippers in an attack on a mosque in Maiyama Local Government Area of the state.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Bashir Usman, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, stating that the incident occurred at about 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday in Dadin Kowa community.
According to him, suspected members of the Lakurawa terrorist group carried out the attack during Taraweeh prayers.
He described the incident as a reprisal, noting that five worshippers lost their lives while three others sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment at a hospital.
Usman said the attackers fled into the bush before security operatives arrived at the scene. He added that police personnel, in collaboration with the military and local vigilante groups, were immediately deployed to the area to restore calm and maintain public order.
The command condoled with the families of the victims and the people of Maiyama over the tragic incident.
Residents believe the attack may be linked to recent security operations targeting the group’s hideouts and a failed ambush on a military commander’s convoy in the area.
The latest incident comes barely a week after suspected Lakurawa fighters allegedly carried out attacks in Arewa Local Government Area of Kebbi State, where dozens of residents were killed.
