The Nigeria Police Force has uncovered and shut down an international cybercrime hub in Agbor, Delta State, arresting seven suspects accused of orchestrating large-scale online investment scams targeting victims in Nigeria, the United Kingdom, and other countries.
According to the Force Headquarters on Thursday, the operation was conducted by the Police National Cybercrime Center (NPF-NCC) in partnership with the UK National Crime Agency (NCA), with intelligence support from Meta.
Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, explained that the syndicate ran a sophisticated scam by impersonating legitimate cryptocurrency traders through fake social media accounts.
“The suspects utilised fake social media accounts to deceive individuals engaging with legitimate investment platforms,” Hundeyin said, adding that the group also recruited and trained young people in online fraud and phishing attacks, with UK residents as their primary targets.
The arrested suspects were identified as Collins Ogwuorie, Christian Ogwuorie, Gbenoba Emmanuel, Samuel Olufemi, Collins Victor, Onyeka Emenem, and Kefas Ogunbor.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the network was led by Collins Ogwuorie, who allegedly purchased about 500 social media accounts from online vendors and distributed them among syndicate members for coordinated impersonation, spamming, and victim engagement. Each suspect reportedly had specific roles, ranging from account management to direct online interaction.
Police further disclosed that the group operated a fake Facebook page titled “Retirement Strategies: Real Estate and Market Insights”, where fabricated testimonials were posted to lure unsuspecting investors.
During the raid, detectives recovered 26 mobile phones, 42 SIM cards, and one laptop, all believed to have been used in the fraudulent operations.
Investigations are ongoing, and authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and verify the authenticity of online investment platforms before engaging.
