Officers of the Nigeria Police and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, will, on Friday, renew their rivalry in the final of the 5th edition of the Ogun SWAN Security Cup at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.
En route to the final, Police Machine thrashed the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) 5-nil, while NSCDC edged past the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) team by a lone goal in the semi-final matches played on Monday at the same venue.
Recall that in 2021, NSCDC beat Police Machine 1-nil to lift the maiden edition of the annual competition.
In 2023, the police officers dislodged the officers of the NSCDC 2-1 in the final to win the ₦0.5 million prize money as champions of the 3rd edition.
In 2024, Police Machine continued their dominance over their arch-rival, Civil Defence, beating them 4-2 in a penalty shootout in the semi-final.
At this year’s edition, Police Machine proved their resilience and dominance in the competition by beating NSCDC 4-3 in a thrilling group-stage encounter on Matchday 1.
The overpowering police officers went on to beat the firefighters of the Ogun State Fire Service 2-1 to reach the semi-final stage.
In the semi-final encounter, Police dismantled the mounted roadblock of the FRSC with a 5-nil win to book a place in the final against NSCDC, who defeated EFCC 1-0 in the second semi-final match.
The final of the annual football competition, being organized by the Ogun State chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), will hold on Friday by 2 p.m.
