The Edo State Police Command says intensified security operations along major highways have led to the rescue of a kidnap victim and the prevention of an attempted abduction.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Moses Yamu, said police operatives successfully rescued Elohor Osifoh, who was abducted on September 10. He explained that the victim was freed following “days of relentless bush combing rescue operations” and has since been reunited with her family.

Yamu further disclosed that in a separate operation, police foiled an attempted abduction of three travellers along the Benin–Lagos Expressway in the early hours of September 13.

“At about 02:30hrs, operatives of the Okada Division led by CSP Opatoyinbo John, while on routine patrol at Morgan and Isiuwa slope, responded swiftly to a distress call regarding a kidnapping attempt,” Yamu said.

According to him, the attackers had barricaded the road with logs and opened fire on a Toyota Sienna vehicle with registration number KUJ 342 CU, driven by Nana Aghogho, 51, who was transporting fingerling fish from Lagos to Akwa Ibom. Two passengers, identified as Oseghale Mathias, and John Edobor, were also onboard.

Police operatives engaged the gunmen in a shootout, forcing them to abandon the operation and escape into the nearby forest.

“The driver and his two passengers were rescued unhurt. The barricades placed by the hoodlums were immediately cleared, restoring free flow of traffic and ensuring the safety of other road users,” Yamu added.

Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, commended the swift response of the operatives and urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities. He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to flushing out criminal elements from highways across the state.
