Police to resume enforcement of tinted glass permits nationwide Jan 2

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced that it will recommence nationwide enforcement of the tinted glass permit policy beginning January 2, 2026, citing rising security concerns linked to the misuse of unauthorised tinted vehicle glass.

The decision was disclosed in a statement issued on Monday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin.

According to the police, the move follows a review of emerging security threats and the need to strengthen public safety, pending the conclusion of a related case currently before the courts. The Force clarified that no court order restrains it from enforcing existing laws regulating tinted glass use.

Enforcement had previously been suspended to promote transparency and give motorists time to regularise documentation and complete permit applications without undue pressure.

However, recent trends revealed that criminals increasingly exploit vehicles with unauthorised tinted glass to conceal identities while committing offences such as armed robbery, kidnapping, and other violent crimes.

“Recent trends reveal a disturbing rise in criminal activities perpetrated with the aid of vehicles fitted with unauthorised tinted glass. Some individuals and organised criminal groups have exploited this gap to conceal their identities and facilitate crimes ranging from armed robbery to kidnapping and other violent crimes. In view of this, the Nigeria Police Force has found it both necessary and urgent to resume full enforcement as a proactive measure to safeguard our communities. Consequently, enforcement of tinted glass permits will resume on 2nd January, 2026,” the statement read.

The police emphasised that the renewed enforcement is a proactive step to protect lives and property nationwide.
