Port Harcourt Airport incident: Controversy trails NSIB report as Air Peace disputes findings

Controversy is trailing the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau, NSIB, report on the Port Harcourt International Airport incident involving domestic carrier, Air Peace, DAILY POST reports.

The report indicted the airline’s crew members for allegedly testing positive for alcohol and drugs.

DAILY POST reports that NSIB recently released its preliminary report on an incident involving Air Peace’s Boeing 737 aircraft at Port Harcourt International Airport on July 13, 2025.

NSIB in the report said the Air Peace captain and first officer tested positive for ethyl – a byproduct of alcohol – while the cabin crew tested positive for THC from cannabis.

However, Air Peace has disagreed with NSIB over the controversial findings.

Although Air Peace said it is yet to officially receive the report which indicted its crew members, the airline went ahead to give its own side of the story.

The airline, in a statement on X, Friday, said, “The First Officer (co-pilot), who demonstrated professionalism in calling for a go-around to his captain, has been reinstated into active flying duties, with full approval from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).”

Similarly, Air Peace cabin crew member Victory Maduneme threatened to drag NSIB to court, denying that she tested positive for drugs.

Further speaking on the incident, Air Peace co-pilot, David Bernard, said the captain did not follow the appropriate landing system.

“I advised him that, Commander, you are high for this approach; we should initiate a go-around. And he didn’t listen to me,” Bernard said.

Meanwhile, the Director General of NSIB, Alex Badeh, has insisted on the findings disclosed in the controversial report.
