Nigeria’s electricity supply could see improvement in the coming days, as the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, says ongoing reforms in the sector are beginning to yield results.
He made this known on Thursday, March 26, 2026, during the first-quarter meeting of the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry held in Lagos.
Details of the meeting were shared by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission on its official platform.
Adelabu said the federal government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has recorded progress in the power sector, including what he described as the highest electricity generation level so far.
“We have also recorded the highest generation levels and improvements across other key indices in the last three years. Our reforms are yielding results, even though they take time to fully materialise,” he said.
The minister explained that recent repairs on previously damaged gas pipelines are expected to boost electricity generation, as supply to thermal power plants is gradually increasing.
“I believe we are on a positive trajectory. The current challenges will soon ease, and within the next two weeks, we expect a significant improvement as gas supply to power plants increases,” Adelabu added.
He also called on stakeholders across the sector to take responsibility and strengthen collaboration.
“We must take ownership of the power sector. This is our country, and we must not be discouraged, as someone has to do the job,” he said.
It was further stated that Chairman of the Commission, Musiliu Oseni, commended the minister for maintaining engagement with stakeholders in the sector.
According to the statement, NERC Commissioner for Legal, Licensing and Compliance, Dafe Akpeneye, acknowledged the minister’s role in efforts aimed at improving electricity supply.
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, which organised the meeting, is responsible for regulating Nigeria’s electricity market, including overseeing tariffs, licensing operators, and ensuring compliance across the sector.
The Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry, NESI, refers to the entire power value chain in the country, covering electricity generation companies, transmission systems, and distribution companies that deliver power to consumers.
The quarterly NESI meeting serves as a platform for these stakeholders to review sector performance, address challenges, and align on strategies to improve electricity supply nationwide.
