President Bola Tinubu will be leaving Aso Rock Villa for the historic streets of Turkiye this week. Scheduled to depart Abuja on Monday, January 26, the President’s state visit marks a significant move to deepen the partnership between the two G20 nations.
According to presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, the mission is about much more than just a handshake. “The visit is aimed at strengthening the existing cordial relations between the two countries and exploring further areas of cooperation in security, education, social development, innovation, and aviation,” Onanuga stated.
This trip serves as a diplomatic bookend to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s official visit to Nigeria back in October 2021. With the groundwork already laid, this week’s discussions are expected to dive deep into the technicalities of international cooperation.
The Presidency highlighted that the agenda is packed with high-level dialogues aimed at mutual economic and political growth. Per the official statement, “during President Tinubu’s visit, both countries will engage in strategic political and diplomatic discussions on shared values in finance, communication, trade and investment.”

It’s not all closed-door politics, though. The visit is designed to produce tangible results through the signing of several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs). These agreements will cover a broad spectrum, including:
– Scientific research and energy
– Technical and military cooperation
– Media, communications, and protocol
To ensure the private sector isn’t left out of the loop, a specialized gathering is also on the itinerary. “A business forum will bring together investors from both countries to explore areas of interest during the visit,” the statement added.
President Tinubu isn’t traveling alone; he is flanked by a “who’s who” of his cabinet to ensure every sector of the bilateral talks has expert representation.
President Tinubu will be accompanied by Amb. Yusuf Tuggar (Foreign Affairs), Prince Lateef Fagbemi SAN (Justice), Gen. Christopher Musa (rtd) (Defence), Malam Nuhu Ribadu (NSA), Amb. Mohammed Mohammed (NIA), Hajiya Imaan Suleiman-Ibrahim (Women Affairs), Hannatu Musawa (Culture), Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo (Interior) and Hon. Jimi Benson (House Committee on Defence) |
President Tinubu is expected to return to Nigeria immediately following the conclusion of the diplomatic proceedings.
