Real Madrid defeated their arch rivals Barcelona 2-1 in the El Clasico on Sunday as they go five points clear at the top of the La Liga table.

The Xabi Alonso side lost all four Clasicos in all competitions last season, but fought hard to secure the win in their first meeting this season.

The hosts were awarded a penalty when Vinicius Jr went down inside the opening two minutes, but the VAR called it off.

Jude Bellingham slid a pass through to French striker Kylian Mbappe to slot past Wojciech Szczesny in the 22nd minute.

Madrid peppered Barca’s third-choice goalkeeper with shots, but were caught out by a 38th-minute counter-attack that ended with Fermin Lopez equalising.

Bellingham then put the hosts ahead again before the break.

The visitors struggled to test Real keeper Thibaut Courtois and the match ended in chaos with clashes on the touchline between the rivals.

Late on, Pedri was shown a second yellow card for a lunge on Aurelien Tchouameni deep into injury-time. Andriy Lunin was also shown a red card.
