Replace expulsion with academic reforms, give students second chance – NANS

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Joint Campus Committee, Kano Axis, has called on the Kano State Governor, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, and heads of tertiary institutions to adopt compassionate and reform-based academic policies that prioritize education over expulsion.

The appeal came during the launch of a new advocacy campaign titled “Education Over Expulsion,” which seeks to promote academic reform, mentorship, and second chances for struggling students rather than outright dismissal.

In a statement signed by Comrade Mudassir Hamza Dankaka, Public Relations Officer of NANS JCC Kano Axis, the association said the campaign aims to reduce student dropouts and prevent young people from turning to crime after being expelled.

“When you expel a student, you don’t just remove them from school, you push them toward the streets and the street rarely reforms anyone,” the statement read.

NANS noted that many young people involved in social vices and criminal activities across Kano are often school dropouts victims of a system that denied them a second chance at education.

“The association is urging all higher institutions, the Kano State Governor, the Speaker of the House of Assembly, and education stakeholders to adopt compassionate and reform-based academic policies that allow students who fail to repeat a year instead of being expelled,” the statement added.

According to Dankaka, “A failed grade should not be a death sentence. Give our students the chance to rebuild. Most of the crimes among our youth are committed by those who once sat in classrooms but were denied another opportunity.”

NANS JCC Kano Axis also called on media platforms, youth groups, and policymakers to support the campaign, emphasizing that when we invest in second chances, we invest in peace, productivity, and purpose.
