The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) will begin an indefinite strike effective over unmet demands on Friday.
The decision followed the expiration of a 30-day ultimatum earlier issued to the Federal Government over the demands.
In a statement signed on Sunday by NARD President, Dr. Mohammad Usman Suleiman, the association said the resolution was reached after a five-hour extraordinary National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja.
The council, according to Suleiman, unanimously directed the National Officers Committee (NOC) to proceed with the industrial action, citing government inaction on long-standing issues affecting resident doctors nationwide.
“Twenty-nine days ago, you gave this National Officers Committee the mandate to lead our noble association and a second mandate of a 30-day ultimatum to the Federal Government on our demands,” the statement posted on NARD’s official X handle (@NARD) read in part.

“Today, after a 5-hour extraordinary NEC meeting, members have unanimously directed us to declare a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike to commence on Friday, October 31, 2025, at 11:59 p.m.”
The statement noted that NEC had also outlined minimum demands, strike monitoring directives, and resolutions on the “No Work, No Pay/No Pay, No Work” principle to guide the execution of the industrial action. All centre presidents and general secretaries have been instructed to convene emergency congresses to brief members on the outcome of the NEC meeting.
Dr. Suleiman alleged that “some elements within and outside government” were pursuing “exploitative plans” against resident doctors but assured members that such efforts would be resisted. He urged members to use the four working days before the strike to hand over patients properly, engage with community and religious leaders, and sensitize the public on the reasons behind the action.
He further called for unity and patience among members, emphasizing that the leadership remained committed to achieving tangible results. “Trust the process, believe in your leaders, and remain resolute. Victory is certain,” he stated, adding that a detailed communiqué and press conference would soon follow to highlight NARD’s specific demands.
It will be recalled that the association embarked on a five-day warning strike on September 12, 2025, which was suspended within 24 hours after an emergency virtual NEC meeting.
