Manchester City midfielder, Rodri has been sanctioned by the English Football Association, but he will not be suspended from playing.
The Manchester City midfielder was fined £80,000 and given a formal warning about his future conduct which occurred during his post-match press conference after the game Spurs at the White Hart Lane.
What did Rodri do?
Rodri was hit with a punishment by the FA following the comments Rodri made after City’s 2–2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur on February 1. After the match, he criticised referee Robert Jones and suggested that officials must remain “neutral,” implying there might be bias in some decisions against Manchester City.
The controversy started after Tottenham striker Dominic Solanke scored a goal that Rodri believed should have been ruled out for a foul on City defender Marc Guéhi. VAR reviewed the incident and allowed the goal to stand, which angered several City players. In a post-match interview, Rodri expressed frustration and suggested that referees should be impartial because City had been suffering from questionable decisions in recent matches.
The FA charged him with improper conduct under Rule E3.1, which covers statements that question the integrity or impartiality of match officials. Rodri later admitted the charge and apologised, explaining that his comments were made out of frustration after the game.
After reviewing the case, an independent regulatory commission decided that a fine and warning were enough punishment, meaning Rodri avoided a suspension and remains available for Manchester City’s upcoming matches, including FA Cup fixtures.
