Russia on Monday affirmed its readiness to ensure closer relations with Islamic countries under the aegis of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov gave the indication at a meeting between the leadership of the Russia-Islamic World Strategic Vision Group (GSV) and OIC ambassadors in Moscow.

The top diplomat emphasised the importance Russia attaches to “fostering productive dialogue and strengthening comprehensive cooperation” with cordial Islamic countries.

The areas of focus include the expansion of economic trade, joint investment projects, and developments in culture, education, science, and other fields of the humanities.

Lavrov said a key factor in the relations is the mutual commitment to the UN Charter, and building a multipolar international order that creates new opportunities for equitable ties free from discrimination.

The meeting was attended by Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin, Head of Tatarstan Republic/GSV Chairman Rustam Minnikhanov, officials of federal and regional authorities, and religious organizations.

The Russia-Islamic World group was established in 2006 under the leadership of former PM Yevgeny Primakov and ex-President of Tatarstan Mintimer Shaimiev after Russia joined the OIC as an observer.

Established in 1969, the OIC is the second-largest intergovernmental organization after the United Nations, comprising 57 member states across four continents.

Arab and Muslim states consider Russia as the most friendly Western nation, with frequent communication between their leaders and President Vladimir Putin, who has been mediating in the Middle East tensions.
