The Confederation of Sahel States, AES, has condemned the attack on Diori Hamani International Airport and Air Base 101 in Niamey, Niger, which occurred on the night of January 28–29.
The condemnation was contained in a statement issued and signed in Ouagadougou on January 31, in which the confederation described the assault as a coordinated operation targeting both military and civilian infrastructure.
According to the statement, the attack endangered civilians and damaged facilities used for civil purposes, warning that the incident posed a serious threat not only to Niger but to the security and stability of the wider Sahel region.
The AES said the violence should not be viewed as an isolated incident, but as part of a broader effort to destabilise the region.
It alleged that the attackers benefited from direct or indirect support networks, including foreign backers.
The confederation warned against any form of financing, logistical assistance or political support for armed groups, stressing that those involved would be held accountable.
It reaffirmed that member states remain united and committed to a coordinated response against terrorism and insecurity across the Sahel.
The AES also expressed solidarity with the government and people of Niger, as well as the country’s defence and security forces, commending their efforts to protect civilians and restore stability.
