Schools, markets closed, farmlands abandoned Gov Radda reveals impact of insecurity in 8 Katsina LGs

Governor Dikko Radda of Katsina State has revealed the severe impact of insecurity in eight high-risk local government areas of the state.

He listed the LGAs to include Jibia, Batsari, Danmusa, Kankara, Safana, Sabuwa, Faskari, and Dandume.

Radda disclosed this on Monday in Katsina while launching an 18-month European Union–funded initiative, Conflict Prevention, Crisis Response and Resilience, aimed at promoting peace and socio-economic stability in Katsina and Zamfara states.

The project is being implemented by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) in collaboration with the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) and Mercy Corps.

He noted that bandit attacks and communal conflicts had forced schools and markets to shut down, displaced thousands of residents, and left farmlands deserted.

“In these communities, children have been kept out of school, parents have buried their children, and elders have fled their ancestral homes. These are unprecedented security and humanitarian challenges,” he said.

Radda further highlighted that the security crisis is compounded by environmental pressures such as drought, desertification, shrinking farmlands, and outdated land use practices, which fuel resource-based conflicts.

He added that economic stagnation and rising youth unemployment are also aggravating factors behind the persistent insecurity.

“These are not isolated issues. They are interconnected crises that demand integrated, holistic, and community-driven solutions,” the governor stressed.

He said his administration was adopting dialogue and negotiation as central strategies in addressing insecurity across troubled local government areas of the state, with peace agreements already secured in some frontline councils.

According to the governor, community-led peace negotiations have so far yielded positive results in Jibia, Batsari, Danmusa, and Kurfi LGAs, while discussions are ongoing in Kankara and Safana with the hope of reaching similar agreements.

“This project is not a top-down intervention. It is community-owned, locally-led and culturally sensitive. From the onset, we ensured that community voices, particularly those of women, youths and persons with disabilities, are central to planning and implementation. So far, crises in four frontline LGAs out of eight have been resolved, and negotiations are ongoing in two others,” Radda stated.
