Afrobeat singer Seun Kuti has recounted a childhood experience involving his parents, the late Fela Anikulapo-Kuti and Fehintola Kuti, during a period when the music icon was in detention.
Seun, in a podcast aired on Thursday, said the incident occurred when Fela was being held at the Federal Investigation and Intelligence Department (FIID) in Alagbon Close, Lagos. According to him, his mother concealed cannabis inside a loaf of bread and asked him to deliver it to his father during a visit.
He explained that he was about eight or nine years old at the time and had no idea what he was carrying. His mother simply handed him the bread and told him to give it to his father when they arrived.
Unaware of anything unusual, he said he passed the item to Fela without suspicion.

Seun added that he only learned what had happened after they left the facility. His sister later informed him that cannabis had been hidden inside the bread, noting that their mother had deliberately kept him in the dark to avoid any risk of him revealing it during the visit.
“We were going to visit my father, and my mum bought bread to give to him. She hid ‘Igbo’ inside the bread and asked me to hand it over when we got there,” he said.
“Bear in mind, I was about eight or nine years old. I didn’t even know what was going on. I just got there and gave the bread to my dad.
“On our way home, my sister asked if I knew there was Igbo in the bread. My mum had told her but didn’t tell me because she knew I might have said something to the police.”
