Shockwaves in Enugu as Mbah’s cabinet dumps PDP for APC as Udeh-Okoye resigns over ‘moral decay’

A major political earthquake has hit Enugu State as Governor Peter Mbah’s entire cabinet has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), ahead of the governor’s expected formal declaration for the party on Tuesday.

The mass defection, confirmed on Monday by the governor’s Senior Media Aide, Dan Nwomeh, signals the collapse of PDP’s 25-year dominance in the state. In a video posted on his social media handles, Nwomeh showed senior government officials—including commissioners and top aides—openly renouncing the PDP and pledging allegiance to the APC.

“Enugu State Cabinet Members join the APC with full chest along with Governor PN Mbah,” Nwomeh declared.

In the footage, the officials were seen chanting: “We are now in APC; tomorrow is here; it is APC all the way; it is Jagaban all the way; from top to bottom.”

The defection, which comes just days before Mbah’s expected formal switch to the APC, marks one of the most sweeping political realignments in recent years in the South-East. It also deals a significant blow to the PDP, which has controlled Enugu State since the return of democracy in 1999.

Meanwhile, former PDP National Youth Leader and ex-lawmaker, Sunday Udeh-Okoye, has officially resigned from the party, citing deep disillusionment with what he described as its loss of “moral compass and ideological direction.”

In a resignation letter dated October 13 and addressed to the PDP Chairman in his Agbogugu Ward, Awgu Local Government Area, Udeh-Okoye lamented that the party had betrayed its founding principles.

“The decision to quit the party did not come lightly,” he wrote. “The PDP was an integral part of my political journey, offering me opportunities to contest and serve in various offices. For these privileges, I remain profoundly grateful.”

“However, I can no longer, in good conscience, remain within a system that has strayed so far from its original purpose. I am compelled to part ways with the PDP as I embark on a progressive journey dedicated to restoring the values of democracy, accountability, and service to the people,” he added.

Udeh-Okoye, who represented Awgu North Constituency in the Enugu State House of Assembly from 2011 to 2017 and later served as PDP National Youth Leader between 2017 and 2021, was a key player in the party’s internal turmoil. His face-off with Senator Samuel Anyanwu over the National Secretary position deepened factional cracks that the PDP has struggled to mend.

Political analysts say Governor Mbah’s anticipated defection—and the total collapse of his cabinet’s loyalty to the PDP—could dramatically reshape Enugu’s political landscape and weaken the opposition’s footing ahead of the 2027 elections.

With the governor’s move, Enugu now joins the list of states in the South-East where the APC is making bold inroads—fuelled by a combination of defections, strategic appointments, and the ruling party’s aggressive expansion drive under President Bola Tinubu.
