Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu has instructed all 23 local government chairmen to relocate to their respective areas to improve governance and remain closer to the people.
He gave the directive while receiving the chairmen during a Sallah visit at the Government House in Sokoto.
According to him, the decision is aimed at bringing leadership closer to the grassroots and ensuring leaders understand the real challenges facing their communities.
“You can only truly understand the problems of your people if you live among them,” the governor said.
He stressed that the practice of chairmen residing in the state capital while administering their local governments must stop.
He added that direct presence in their communities would help build on progress already made at the grassroots level.
Governor Aliyu also urged the chairmen to be more active and directly involved in running their councils to improve service delivery and accelerate development.
He further revealed plans by the state government to either recover official residences in all 23 local government areas or construct new ones.
This, he said, would provide proper accommodation for chairmen and council staff, making their work more effective.
Earlier, the Sokoto State Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Alhaji Abba Shehu Tambuwal, assured the governor that all chairmen are committed to supporting the administration’s development plans.
He said they would work closely with traditional rulers, community leaders, and security agencies to tackle local challenges, while promoting peace, stability, and sustainable development across the state.
