Usman Midala Balami, the sole member of the House of Representatives elected on the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, platform from Askira-Uba/Hawul Federal Constituency in Borno State, has officially joined the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.
Balami’s move came as a shock, particularly among his supporters, after he was seen attending the APC Stakeholders Meeting held at the Multi-Purpose Hall, Government House, Maiduguri, on Sunday.
In a resignation letter dated January 24, 2026, addressed to the PDP chairman of Bwalahizhi Ward in Hawul Local Government Area and copied to the party’s local and state leadership, Balami confirmed his decision to leave the PDP.
He explained that the step followed extensive consultations with leaders across political lines, as well as discussions with family and close associates.
“After wide consultations with leaders across political parties, as well as friends, family, and loved ones, I have found it necessary to tender my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party with immediate effect,” he stated.
Balami cited internal party challenges as a key reason for his departure.
“The deepening crisis and persistent factional divisions within the party have continued to undermine its unity and effectiveness,” he said.
Despite leaving, the lawmaker expressed gratitude to the PDP for the chance to serve under its platform, noting that the experience greatly contributed to his growth and public service.
