The lawmaker representing Yakurr State Constituency, Cyril Omini, has confirmed that the young man, Bassey Ubi, who killed his father last Sunday, was under the strong influence of drugs.

He made this known today on the floor of the House during a plenary session.

He called on the State Security Adviser, Major Gen Ubi (rtd), to intensify efforts to rid the state of drugs.

He said, “The young man who killed his father last week was actually under the influence of drugs, which are now prevalent in our communities and city centres.

“He actually came out of their house with a machete, held his father’s head, and chopped it off.

“This is the sheer influence of drugs to which young people have become addicted,” he said.

Other lawmakers also spoke in the same vein, calling on relevant authorities, especially drug agencies and the State Security Adviser, to tackle the prevalence of drugs in the state.

The 23-year-old son killed his father upon returning from church on Sunday.

The incident happened around O-3 Palace, Usaja, in Ikpakapit Ward, Ugep, Yakurr Local Government Area of Cross River State.

The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, in the state, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, had confirmed the incident.
