
The Chairman of Abia State Universal Basic Education Board, ASUBEB, Ezihe Lydia Onuoha, has said that sports plays central role in quality education, noting that athletics go beyond extracurricular engagement.
She also declared that sporting activities are not optional addition to education in the state but essential component of quality education and learning experience.
Onuoha stated this on Thursday at Umuahia Township Stadium Basic Education School Sports, BEES, State Finals organized by ASUBEB and Universal Basic Education Commission, UBEC.
According to her, sports is being used to identify future champions from Abia schools and to instill discipline and values in young learners.
“Sporting activities are not an optional addition to education; they are an essential component of a quality learning experience,” she said.
The ASUBEB chairman also explained that sports development at the basic education level strengthens holistic learning by combining physical fitness with character building, teamwork and healthy competition.
She stated that Governor Alex Otti’s administration’s investment in sports would provide a balanced development in children and promote the unity of the state and the nation at large.
The Executive Secretary of UBEC, Aisha Garba, who spoke through the Director of Basic Education, Mr. Sampson Nnaemeka, said that sports has become an integral part of Nigeria’s educational system.
