Strait of Hormuz: US Navy to escort oil tankers amid Iranian activity

3 hours ago 1

United States Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, on Thursday, announced that the U.S. Navy will soon begin escorting oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, a move aimed at safeguarding maritime transport in the region.

In an interview on Sky News, Bessent noted, “As soon as it is militarily possible, the US Navy, perhaps with an international coalition, will be escorting vessels through.”

He also confirmed that Iranian and some Chinese-flagged tankers are currently operating in the strait, indicating that it remains safe for passage.

These statements come amid heightened tensions following Iran’s aggressive actions targeting shipping and energy infrastructure, which have contributed to rising oil prices, exceeding $100 per barrel.

Meanwhile, Iran’s new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has declared that the Strait of Hormuz will be kept closed, further complicating the situation.
