A suspected disease outbreak has reportedly hit bandits’ camps in parts of Niger and Zamfara states, worsening conditions within the forest hideouts and disrupting the operations of the armed groups.
A victim who recently escaped from captivity in Niger State, and who spoke with DAILY POST on condition of anonymity, disclosed that both abductees and some members of the criminal gangs were battling various illnesses inside the camps.
The source, who requested not to be named for security reasons, said the health challenges had created tension within the hideouts.
According to him, the lack of medicines, food supplies, and access to healthcare services in the forest further worsened the situation, leaving many in critical condition.
He added that the outbreak, alongside shortages of funds and essential supplies, has significantly weakened the groups’ operational capacity in some affected communities.
The victim further stated that the development could provide security operatives with a strategic advantage to intensify operations against the armed groups in the troubled areas.
