Super Eagles celebrate Musa as ex-captain retires from team

The official X account of the Super Eagles has celebrated the retirement of the team’s ex-Captain Ahmed Musa, who announced his retirement on Wednesday.

Musa made the announcement on social media, expressing his gratitude for the opportunity to serve the team to the point of holding the highest number of appearances.

He is the first Nigerian to score in two FIFA World Cup competitions. He also won the 2013 Nations Cup.

“I wore this badge with pride for 15 years. From a 17-year-old boy answering every call 🇳🇬 to becoming the most capped Super Eagle with 111 appearances.

“AFCON champion 🏆 Nigeria’s highest World Cup goalscorer ⚽ Captain. Servant. Believer. I gave everything.
Thank you Nigeria… my heart will always beat green. 🦅🇳🇬,” he wrote on his X account.

Musa’s last appearance for the Super Eagles was against the Black Stars of Ghana at the Unity Cup invitational tournament in May.

Meanwhile, all 28 invited players for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) have arrived the team camp ahead of their departure to Morocco.

The Super Eagles will be facing Tanzania, Tunisia, and Uganda in the group stages of the tournament, which begins on Sunday, 21 December, 2025.

The team, led by coach Eric Chelle, will be looking to go a step further this time as they fell short in the final of the last edition to come second behind Cote d’Ivoire.
