The Taiwan question is the most important issue in China-U.S. relations, President Xi Jinping told President Donald Trump in a phone call on Wednesday.
President Xi reiterated his nation’s resolution to safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity, vowing that China will never allow Taiwan to be separated.
“Taiwan is China’s territory,” the Chinese leader stated. “The U.S. must handle the issue of arms sales to Taiwan with prudence.”
He encouraged Washington and Beijing to continue to build mutual trust, find the right way to be in harmony, and advance toward peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation in 2026.
Xi highlighted the major upcoming events, including China’s 15th Five-Year Plan, its hosting of the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting, the U.S. 250th anniversary, and its hosting of the G20 Summit.
The President advised both sides to abide by the common understandings earlier reached, “enhance dialogue and communication, manage differences properly, and expand practical cooperation.”
The readout by the Chinese government quoted President Trump as describing the U.S. and China as great countries, whose relationship is by far the most important in the world.
Affirming his “great relationship” and “respect” for President Xi, Trump noted that both nations are doing well in their economy and trade, and would like to see more progress in bilateral ties.
On the Taiwan question, Trump said he understands how China but would like the two sides to continue talking to each other and keep the relationship in good shape during his presidency.
